The Match

Philadelphia Union entered the match with its eighth different lineup in eight games this season, reflecting a lack of consistency early in the year.

Even so, the team attempted to press early, but the momentum was short-lived. In the 6th minute, from a wide free kick, Raphael Veiga delivered a cross that found Rodrigo Dourado, who opened the scoring and effectively put América in control of the tie.

The goal shifted the match. América dominated the first half, controlling possession and creating the better chances. Alejandro Zendejas was a standout, even scoring a chipped finish that was later disallowed.

Philadelphia had its best opportunity of the half through a high press sequence. Indiana Vassilev found Cavan Sullivan, who set up Stas Korzeniowski in front of goal, but the forward failed to convert.

América was later awarded a penalty through Brian Rodríguez, but the decision was overturned by VAR.

If the first half belonged to América, the second half unfolded differently.

Bradley Carnell made key adjustments, dropping Ferry Larson deeper into defense and introducing Frankie Westfield. The change altered the match. Westfield provided energy and width, quickly becoming Union’s most influential player.

Soon after coming on, Westfield drew a penalty, which Jesús Bueno converted to bring Philadelphia level.

From that point, Union controlled the match. With more freedom in attack, Sullivan became increasingly involved, and the team applied sustained pressure.

The clearest chance came from a low cross delivered by Sullivan, but Korzeniowski again failed to convert. Union also created a strong counterattack opportunity, with Milan Iloski through on goal, but the finish went wide.

Despite territorial dominance and sustained pressure, Philadelphia could not translate volume into goals. The lack of efficiency in the final third remained evident.

Bruno Damiani entered but did not register a shot, while 16-year-old Malik Jakubovic managed an attempt, showing potential as a future option

América, despite advancing, struggled in the second half. The team had difficulty maintaining possession and offered little attacking threat, raising concerns ahead of the next round.

Raphael Veiga (Club América)

Delivered the assist for the opening goal and continued his strong run of form, contributing decisively once again.

Tactical Context

Before the match, André Jardine emphasized the importance of using a full-strength lineup in knockout play:

“In the Champions Cup, there is no rotation. The best eleven must be on the field.”

The statement gained weight as América advanced, while Philadelphia’s in-game decisions came under scrutiny. Bradley Carnell was again questioned, particularly for substituting Cavan Sullivan at a stage when the team needed a goal, introducing Danley Jean Jacques instead.

What It Means

Club América advances but leaves concerns after a weak second-half performance, showing vulnerability despite controlling the tie.

Philadelphia Union exits the competition with another negative result, but the second-half performance offered some positives. The team demonstrated the ability to compete at a high level but continues to be limited by inefficiency in attack.
