Club Brugge take control of title race with demolition of Union St Gilloise

Club Brugge look set for their 20th league title. The side hammered title rivals Union St Gilloise 5-0 at home to take a four point lead with just two games to go. Union, fresh off of their cup victory over Anderlecht midweek, were soundly beaten in Brugge in a game they realistically had to win in order to do the domestic double.

Remarkably, just a few weeks ago, it looked like Union were set to win the league. In Brussels, Union beat Club Brugge 2-1 to take a four point lead themselves. However, Union then dropped points against Gent and Sint Truiden, allowing Club Brugge to make a comeback. Ivan Leko’s side have not lost a game since and now just need to beat KV Mechelen on the 21st of May to win the league.

Once again Christos Tzolis was on terrific form, with three assists and a goal. Hans Vanaken got the scoring started with a wonderful finish after just half an hour. The best goal of the game should have gone to Union however. The side had already lost when Kevin Mac Allister scored an incredible overhead kick, only for VAR to rule it out for an offside in the build up.

Union may look back with some disappointment that they were unable to take advantage of that home victory over Club Brugge, but at least they will not be ending the season without a trophy.
