News on Wednesday that clubs have discussed the idea of allowing six substitutes per team to be made.
BBC Sport report (see below) that informal discussions took place last week.
Many top clubs were in Rome, including some from the Premier League, for the European Football Clubs general assembly.
When some clubs met for private talks, as well as allowing six substitutes per team, the ide was also raised of allowing senior squads of 28 players, rather than the current 25.
I don’t about you but whenever I hear about any suggested changes from clubs or the governing bodies, I very rarely think that it sounds a good idea.
There are already so many football players who play little to no first team football, so encouraging clubs to have even bigger squads is just plain daft to me.
As for allowing teams six substitutes each per match, I find that idea even more ridiculous. How can anybody think that having five subs allowed isn’t enough???
It does my head in during matches already, when teams make countless changes, usually in the second half. If a team is winning they might make three or even four subs at one time and this can take what feels like forever. They troop off one by one, whereas I would have them hold up all three boards at once and the ones coming off have 15 seconds to get off the pitch at the nearest point (what happened to that rule???).
As I say, bad enough now, but imagine if you ended up with 12 subs made in the second half of a match, it would just take forever.
‘Europe’s top clubs, including some Premier League sides, have held discussions about using six substitutes per game to ease the workload on players.
Sides met at the European Football Clubs’ (EFC) general assembly in Rome last week to discuss issues within the game.
It was not officially on the agenda, but clubs had informal, private discussions about utilising 28-man squads – up from the current 25 – and six substitutes.
Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest were among those from the Premier League in Italy.
