The much anticipated Celtic AGM ended abruptly on Friday morning after the board took umbrage to flak aimed in their direction, by irate shareholders who have had enough of both their arrogance and incompetence.
A chorus of heckles and a vocal rendition of ‘Sack the Board’ were clearly heard after Ross Desmond was allowed by the Chairman Peter Lawwell to launch an all-out attack on Celtic supporters criticism of his dad’s boardroom chums, whilst also labelling the Green Brigade as ‘bullies’. It was a Dermot Desmond rant mark two, the first aimed at Brendan Rodgers for pointing out his need for new signings and now the second at the support for having the cheek to argue with the Celtic dictator.
This seemed to have struck a nerve of the shysters who run our club, and Lawwell in particular who scowled like an irate headmaster faced with rebellious pupils, it was then that the AGM was brought to an end as Lawwell and his cronies exited the scene with their tails very much between their legs.
What were they expecting? To be showered with praise? Supporters aren’t impressed with record turnovers we helped create, we want the club to make the most of its resources, we don’t want our hard earned cash resting in a PLC account.
I’m not sure that the Celtic Board will take note of the anger aimed in their direction, they may have been took aback by the hostility, but they’ve simply blames it all on the Green Brigade and the Celtic Trust. The vindictiveness that they showed to a manager who wanted the best for Celtic is now being shown to the Green Brigade, with Ross Desmond commenting on what is now a criminal case before it’s been heard by a sheriff. They are not the judge and jury, he’s just a guy with a rich daddy.
The future of the north curve is now in doubt but despite the way the Celtic Board want to shape this, The Celtic Fans Collective is an organisation representing a much wider group of Celtic supporters and it is the who are protesting. There’s a meeting of the Collective on Monday night and there they will shape a response to Ross Desmond and his daddy.
This is now about the heart and soul of Celtic. It’s about the Celtic every other Celtic dad will be passing down to their sons and daughters. Yesterday was one of the blackest days ever in Celtic’s history. Fergus McCann may have saved Celtic in 1994 but he was aided by a Celtic support that has continued to shovel money into the club’s coffers ever since.
Peter Lawwell took offence at the heckling at the AGM, the wider Celtic support may well have been annoyed with that too however the intervention of Ross Desmond – reading out a pre-prepared dictate written by his daddy – is the real story. The Board might want to get rid of the Green Brigade but the Celtic support through the Celtic Fans Collective will make their own wishes clear after the meeting on Monday night.
