The MLS is suffering a little stop with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the news keeps coming fast. A few days ago, we discussed how the Columbus Crew and LAFC signed players to reinforce their defense.
Now, the link between River Plate, one of Argentina’s best teams, and an MLS club is back on track after the rumours regarding Juan Fernando Quintero and Franco Armani.
This time, the MLS club making a signing is, once again, the Columbus Crew. The Crew will strengthen their right side. And for that, they’ve called River Plate.
Andres Herrera is a well-known player for the Crew. It joined the MLS in 2024. The Columbus Crew acquired him on loan for two years. To date, the US team has been highly satisfied with Herrera's performance throughout his two-year loan.
Confirming their interest in signing him on a permanent deal. Pending the resolution of the final details, Herrera's transfer is expected to be completed for $1.2 million, with the buying club acquiring 100% of his rights.
Since joining the Crew, Herrera has played 57 games, scoring seven goals and delivering six assists, while also winning the 2024 Leagues Cup.
The truth is that “Yacare” Herrera did not enjoy a successful spell at River Plate, delivering inconsistent performances and eventually falling out of favor with Marcelo Gallardo, who relegated him from the first team.
He is well known for his aggressive defending and physical presence, but one of the main reasons he was unable to reach his potential earlier in his career was his ball-handling ability.
The 28-year-old right back was not comfortable with the ball at his feet, and that weakness was often shown during his time at River Plate.
However, arriving at the MLS provides him with an ideal environment to reach his full potential and become a crucial piece in the Crew’s first team.
