Comeback against Bergamo? Kompany is cautious with Kane

Bayern striker Harry Kane was forced to sit out the home game against Borussia Mönchengladbach after suffering a blow to his calf. Whether he will be able to play against Atalanta Bergamo is still questionable

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany saw his team win 4-1 at home on Friday evening despite the absence of Harry Kane. Even though he was not allowed to play himself, Kane was seen in the dressing room of the Allianz Arena after the game and made a good impression on Kompany

„He has good body language,“ Kompany said on Sky after the game. When asked what this means for the first leg of the round of 16 against Atalanta Bergamo on Tuesday, the Belgian explained: „It means he’s motivated for the next game. Hopefully he’ll make it.“

Unlike Kane, however, there were no health reasons for leaving out Michael Olise. Kompany simply recalled: „The lads play at full throttle almost every game – Luis Díaz too, and Harry too. If we have the opportunity to take a player out without losing too much, that can be very important at this stage. That way, Michael Olise can be 100 per cent fit for the next game.“

Kompany praises rotation players

Even if he has to do without Kane again, Kompany is confident about the clash against Atalanta: „I’m not one to complain for too long about a situation that isn’t one hundred per cent ideal. We’ll see: if Harry makes it, that’s great. If not, we’ll carry on and try to get to the next round with the boys we have.“

Kompany’s confidence is by no means unfounded after the strong performance of Kane replacement Nicolas Jackson. Jackson set up Konrad Laimer’s 2-0 against Gladbach, took the penalty that led to Jamal Musiala’s 3-0 and scored Bayern’s fourth goal of the evening himself.

Overall, the Bayern coach was delighted with the performances of his rotational players because „whether it’s Lennart Karl or Michael Olise or Jackson or Harry Kane – we have goals in the team and that’s important,“ he said.
