Late in the summer transfer window, Roma sealed a move for Marten De Roon, who joined from Atalanta in what was a deal that closed quickly.

The Dutchman worked closely with Gian Piero Gasperini during their time together in Bergamo and this became key in the deal.

When the World Cup ended, De Roon had expected to be received warmly by his former club as he was club captain. Upon his return, that didn’t happen. It became clear to him that new sporting director Cristiano Guintoli was changing the look of the squad. 

The Dutchman was offered no explanation over his role and Guintoli even tried to offer him to Bologna in a cash plus swap deal for Jonathan Rowe. This left De Roon shocked and he asked for his contract to be terminated.

In the meantime, Gasperini called him and soon, the Roma manager also spoke to Luca Percassi about a deal. Atalanta appeared happy to execute a deal and the player wanted some days to bid farewell to the club.

He wasn’t allowed that chance, especially as Gasperini wanted him in the squad for Roma’s game against Lecce. He obeyed the call, even if he would have rather bid adieu to Atalanta in a more respectful way.
