Roma completed a late-window deal to sign Marten de Roon from Atalanta, a transfer wrapped up at speed.
According to Corriere dello Sport, the midfielder was disappointed with how his Atalanta stint ended. He remains attached to Bergamo, where his wife and daughters still live, despite his move to Roma.
After the World Cup, he expected a warm reception as club captain on his return, but it did not arrive. It soon became clear to him that new sporting director Cristiano Guintoli was reshaping the squad.
He was given no clarity over his role and Guintoli tried to offer him to Bologna in a cash plus player proposal for Jonathan Rowe. Shocked, de Roon asked for his contract to be terminated.
In the meantime, Gian Piero Gasperini phoned him, and shortly afterwards the Roma manager spoke to Luca Percassi about a deal. Atalanta seemed content to proceed, while the player asked for a few days to say goodbye.
That chance did not come, with Gasperini wanting him available for Roma’s match against Lecce. He followed the instruction, even though he would have preferred a more respectful farewell in Bergamo.
