Persistent ankle pain is delaying Malick Fofana’s return for Lyon, with the winger still recovering from last year’s operation.

According to Le Progres, Paulo Fonseca had hoped the Belgian would kick off his season against Servette on Wednesday, but he was left off the teamsheet after ongoing discomfort.

Speaking after the match, the Lyon head coach said Fofana remains in significant pain and started this season with it. He added the player is progressing, yet the surgeon seen in England wants a meeting with the surgeon who operated on him in France, and medical staff will not take risks because doctors have doubts.

Asked whether Fofana will travel with Lyon to their Bavaria camp on Saturday, Fonseca said he hopes the winger can continue working normally with the group.

For now, his immediate involvement appears uncertain, with further medical discussions requested.
