Malick Fofana has yet to feature in pre-season for Olympique Lyonnais, continuing to train separately as pain in his right ankle persists after last autumn’s injury. According to L'Équipe, he has not played in any of Lyon’s three friendlies.

Paulo Fonseca had hoped to give the 21-year-old Belgian winger minutes in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Servette, but the club chose not to take any risks.

Fofana suffered a serious right ankle injury on 26 October 2025 against Strasbourg after a tackle by Ismaël Doukouré, only returning very late last season.

Fonseca said Fofana spoke to his surgeon two days before the Servette match and that the medical staff still have doubts. He explained that the English specialist who last assessed the player and the French surgeon who operated must meet to decide whether he should resume playing. For now, Fofana will continue individual work and the club must wait.

His campaign is already significantly delayed. He managed eight minutes in the Europa League on 19 March, then short Ligue 1 cameos, five minutes on 22 March and 20 minutes in May. Fonseca added that Fofana began this season with pain, although he is improving.
