FC Barcelona have officially announced the signing of Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal on the transfer deadline day.
The 29-year-old centre-forward arrives on a permanent transfer, signing a three-year contract with the La Liga champions until 2029.
“Arsenal and FC Barcelona have reached an agreement for the transfer of Gabriel Jesus to the Blaugranes. The Brazilian striker signs on as a culer for three seasons,” the club statement read.
Barcelona had been chasing a new striker all summer after having parted ways with both Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.
Julian Alvarez was the priority target for Hansi Flick and Deco, but Atletico Madrid’s fierce refusal to enter into negotiations for the Argentine forced the Catalans to look elsewhere.
And the Blaugrana moved in on Jesus, who was available as a market opportunity, with his contract at Arsenal expiring in 2027.
Barcelona have shelled out a fee of €10 million for the 29-year-old striker, with an additional €4 million set in variables. In addition, the Gunners also retain a 20% future sell-on clause.
Given his injury issues over the past couple of years, Jesus does represent a gamble for Barcelona, but at that fee and factoring in the experience he brings in, it could prove to be a shrewd short-term solution for the La Liga champions.
