“Manchester City and FC Barcelona have reached an agreement for the transfer of Rodrigo Hernández “Rodri”. The Madrid-born footballer has signed with the Blaugrana until June 30, 2030,” the club statement read.

A coup for Barcelona

For a while in the summer, it appeared like Rodri was headed to Real Madrid, who were making progress in their efforts to bring in the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner.

However, Barcelona’s entry into the race changed the entire situation as the Spain captain decided that he only wanted to join the Blaugrana.

A contract agreement was soon agreed, but negotiations with Manchester City were tense and prolonged, until an agreement was finally reached this past weekend.

As per the terms of the deal, Barcelona will shell out a total package of €76.5 million, of which €60 million is fixed fee, €11.5 million is the easily achievable part of the variables, while the remaining €5 million will be difficult to achieve.

Rodri arrived in Barcelona on Monday evening and went through his medical and contract signing earlier today, before the club announced his signing.

He is expected to take the No. 16 shirt, which has been vacated by Fermin Lopez, who took over the #7 following Ferran Torres’ exit.

The 30-year-old will not make his debut for Barça tomorrow in the Joan Gamper Trophy match, considering that he has not trained with the team yet and has only recently recovered from a minor back surgery.
