Manchester City face Newcastle United in the opening leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie at St. James’ Park on Tuesday evening.

The Blues secured their first win of 2026 on Saturday as nine different players were on the scoresheet in a 10-1 rout of Exeter City as City – managed by Pepijn Lijnders as Pep Guardiola served a suspension – sealed their berth in the FA Cup fourth round.

Guardiola watches on from the stands as Antoine Semenyo scored and provided an assist for Rico Lewis on his Manchester City debut just days after completing a £64 million transfer to the Etihad Stadium from Bournemouth on a five-and-a-half year deal.

City are working to convince Crystal Palace to sanction a January sale for England international defender Marc Guehi in the wake of injuries to Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea earlier this month.

Max Alleyne was recalled from a loan at Watford last week and has since started for Manchester City against Brighton and Exeter – scoring a first senior goal for his boyhood club to break the deadlock against Exeter on Saturday.

City are yet to recall Mateo Kovacic, Oscar Bobb and John Stones from injury, with Ballon d’Or winner Rodri expected to feature against Newcastle at St. James’ Park after scoring his first goal for Manchester City in over 600 days against Exeter.

Guardiola confirmed in a press conference on Monday afternoon that some Manchester City players are ‘suffering from niggles’ ahead of the trip to Tyneside, where a win can give the Blues the all-important edge heading back to the return leg at the Etihad Stadium.
