Following a record-breaking performance for the Spain U-21 national team on Thursday, Real Madrid starlet Carlos Espi has been called up to the Spain senior national team squad.

Indeed, the Real Madrid summer signing has been added to the squad by manager Luis de la Fuente as a replacement for PSG’s Ferran Torres, who has suffered an ankle sprain.

“Ferran Torres has left the Spanish national team camp. The Valencian international, who plays for PSG, had been experiencing discomfort in his left ankle,” the statement from Spain read.

“Initially, this didn’t prevent him from training and playing, but due to the persistence of the symptoms, the decision was made to withdraw him from the squad to prioritize his recovery.”

“Therefore, Luis de la Fuente has decided to call up Under-21 international Carlos Espí to join the senior national team camp and face the matches against Czech Republic and Croatia in Oviedo and Split.”

This represents a major step in the right direction for Espi and a reward for his bright start to the season at Real Madrid.

Even though he has largely been used as a substitute off the bench by Jose Mourinho, the young striker has scored two goals – one a match-winning effort and another that salvaged a draw, in only 26 minutes across five games.

On Thursday, in what was only his second appearance for Spain U-21, Espi scored a total of five goals and even registered two assists in a 13-0 rout.

Now, he will get to work with the World Champions and potentially even make his senior debut for La Roja in their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Czechia.
