There had been some expectation of a change to the opener after strong earthquakes in Venezuela, which led to the death of 18-year-old UCV midfielder Yimvert Berroterán. Despite the tragedy, Conmebol kept the date and venue.

If Santos get through to the last 16, they will face Maracá, Ecuador. Other last-16 ties will pit Boca Juniors, Atlético-MG, Botafogo, Olímpia, River Plate, City Torque and São Paulo against play-off winners.

In the group stage, Santos finished runners-up in Group D on seven points, the lowest total among second-placed teams, with one win, four draws and one defeat, scoring eight and conceding six. Recoleta, Paraguay, topped the section with eight points to reach the last 16, with San Lorenzo on seven and Deportivo Cuenca on six behind.

UCV came third in Libertadores Group H with nine points from three wins and three defeats, scoring seven and conceding 11, behind Rosario Central and Independente Del Vale on 13, and ahead of Libertad, who had none. Founded in 1950 in Caracas, UCV are among Venezuela’s more traditional clubs.
