Abel Ferreira has been fined 15,000 dollars and given a warning by Conmebol’s Disciplinary Commission for showing a middle finger to Palmeiras striker Flaco López during celebrations of the first goal in the 2-0 win over Sporting Cristal in Lima in the Libertadores.
According to Globo.com, the case was heard on Monday under Article 11.2, items B and C, for offensive conduct. Palmeiras will not appeal to the Appeals Committee, which carries a 3,000 dollar fee.
The fine will be deducted automatically from sums due to the club for broadcast and sponsorship rights. The disciplinary process was opened by the confederation earlier this month.
Post-match, Ferreira explained he had reacted towards López because he demands a lot from the forward, noting the striker had first gestured a thumbs-up at him. After serving a domestic suspension and returning to speak to the media, he apologised, calling the gesture an error and saying he did not intend to provoke anyone.
This is his second disciplinary case of 2026. In April he received a formal warning under Article 11.2, items D and F, for criticism of VAR, including a reference to the 2025 Libertadores final and a possible red card incident involving Erick Pulgar.
Following that warning, Ferreira said he would change his interview style and not act as a shield. He later added he could not speak about Conmebol, declining to engage with a question linked to Cerro Porteño reducing the pitch for a 1-1 draw.
