Conmebol fines Rosario Central US$ 100,000 for racist abuse in Corinthians tie | OneFootball

Conmebol has fined Rosario Central US$ 100,000, about R$ 517,000, after racist abuse by home supporters during the Libertadores last-16 first leg against Corinthians in Argentina in early August.

According to Globo.com, the confederation's disciplinary committee applied the minimum penalty under an article that sanctions clubs when fans insult or attack human dignity on grounds including skin colour, race, sex, sexual orientation, ethnicity, language, creed or origin, disability, political stance or ideology, economic status, place of birth or any other status.

At the Gigante de Arroyito, Corinthians goalkeeper Hugo Souza reported being racially abused from the stands. The referee signalled the anti-racism protocol but did not stop play.

For their next home match in a Conmebol competition, Rosario Central must display a banner reading "Respeito é essencial" on the pitch during the pre-match protocol, and show the same message on the big screen from the second half.

The club must also run a social media campaign with the same phrase across the three days before that fixture.

Coach Jorge Almirón was fined US$ 50,000, R$ 258,000, and the club US$ 32,000, R$ 165,000, for delaying the pre-match protocol. Further fines of US$ 8,000, R$ 41,000, were issued for fans using flares or fireworks and US$ 5,000, R$ 25,000, for objects thrown on to the pitch.
