Contract delay leaves Memphis waiting on Corinthians return | OneFootball

Memphis Depay’s Corinthians renewal has been delayed again, the club slow to send his contract and the striker still waiting to fly back to Brazil.

According to Globo.com, president Osmar Stabile said by early Wednesday evening the paperwork had not reached Memphis’s lawyers after a planned Tuesday signing slipped. It was only sent late that night, already the early hours in the Netherlands.

Memphis’s camp say he will travel to São Paulo only once the deal is signed or at least jointly reviewed. A Thursday arrival is possible, and he could attend Corinthians v Athletico-PR at Neo Química Arena.

Though a two-year extension is close, allies of Stabile are pushing him to walk away. The board insist on medicals, a standard step opponents say could flag issues.

Memphis had fitness issues before joining in September 2024. This season he has played 14 matches, with one goal and one assist, and he came on after half time in all three of his World Cup games for the Netherlands.

If he passes tests and the CBF file the papers, he could feature in the Copa do Brasil last-16 second leg against Internacional on the sixth. His deal expires on Friday and must be renewed to enter the CBF’s BID, with three transfer bans in place and lawyers warning any lapse could sideline him until they are lifted. The club’s legal team believe renewal is possible even after Friday. Funds are short, with R$ 21.5 million still needed to lift the bans.
