Real Sociedad beat Atlético Madrid on penalties to win the Copa del Rey, Marrero saving two in the shootout for the club’s fourth crown. The goalkeeper had also taken them through via a shootout in the last 16. Though he missed the final after a winter move to Valencia, Umar Sadiq contributed to the run and will be listed among the winners.
According to Superdeporte, Real began their campaign in October against SD Negreira, then faced Reus, Eldense, Osasuna, Alavés and Athletic. Each tie proved pivotal, aided by flashes of good fortune.
Sadiq started on the bench against Reus, introduced at half-time with the game at 0-0 as nerves grew and Sergio Francisco turned to him. Four minutes later he set up Mikel Goti to put Real ahead. Late on, with the Catalans chasing an equaliser, he struck for 0-2 to earn MVP after 45 minutes.
For clubs outside Europe the route is longer, and this applied to Real, who began the season poorly. Under Pellegrino Matarazzo they turned the situation around, with improved displays from Carlos Soler and Gonçalo Guedes among others.
He later scored two more Copa goals for Valencia CF, against Burgos CF and Athletic Club. Having represented two clubs in this season’s competition, it is possible he could receive an extra payment from San Sebastián if no change was specified when his Valencia move was agreed.
