Real Sociedad return to San Sebastián with fourth Copa del Rey after shootout win over Atlético | OneFootball

Real Sociedad clinched their fourth Copa del Rey in Sevilla, defeating Atlético on penalties, with homegrown grafters Marrero and Marín emerging as heroes. The long-held wish to lift the trophy with supporters, unlike in 2021, has finally been realised.

The team touched down in Gipuzkoa to a huge outpouring from fans, the players bleary but jubilant. According to AS, San Sebastián woke with a hangover after a night of celebration.

The flight from the Andalusian capital landed at 14:09 at Hondarribia airport, around an hour behind schedule. Oskarsson carried the cup, the security arch beeped as he tried to pass, so he detoured through a side lane laughing.

Thousands greeted the squad at the aerodrome. After the group disembarked and staff formed a corridor, 15 minutes later captains Mikel Oyarzabal and Aritz Elustondo paraded the trophy aloft to roars.

The celebrations moved onto the club bus bound for Zubieta in San Sebastián, on a route that will pass several municipalities and neighbourhoods.

San Sebastián’s mayor, Jon Insausti, said the experience in Sevilla had been incredible and spoke with emotion on arrival.

A joint operation by the Ertzaintza and the Guardia Municipal, involving 340 officers, will oversee security for tomorrow’s main reception. The Basque Security Department expects more than 100,000 people to attend the festivities.
