Corinthians are planning ways to mark 50 years since the 1976 Invasão Corinthiana at the Maracanã, but Fluminense have pushed back. On 5 December 1976 more than 70,000 travelled for a semi-final with Fluminense, which Corinthians won on penalties.
According to Meu Timao, the first plan was to rent the Maracanã for a 5 December tribute, with concerts and appearances by the 1976 squad and their families. The club also explored deals with interstate coach firms to run themed caravans and fill the ground.
The idea was put to Fluminense during a December visit to Parque São Jorge and was not welcomed. Directors saw 1976 as a missed title and bristled at narratives they felt overstated the travelling Corinthians support. They stressed their right to veto events, under the September 2024 deal that gives Fluminense 35% of the operator and Flamengo 65%.
Corinthians then looked at staging their Brasileirão meeting with Fluminense at the Maracanã on 20 September, round 28. Fluminense president Mattheus Montenegro said there had been no talks and any formal request would be rejected, calling it a marketing idea and saying the Maracanã is their home, with the contract keeping their fans in the South Stand.
Any move would be weighed with the football department and squad, given the late-season timing and potential sporting risk. If the plan does not progress, a friendly at the Maracanã during the World Cup break is also under review. Nike’s 2026/27 kit and a revived crest will reference the 1976 episode.
