Corinthians visit Rosario Central at the Gigante de Arroyito on Thursday at 21:30 for the Copa Libertadores last-16 first leg, also seeking to improve a poor record against Argentinian clubs.

As reported by Meu Timao, the tie doubles as a chance to address a historically modest return against Argentinian rivals. Since 1977 Corinthians have faced them 24 times in the competition, winning six, drawing eight and losing 10, a 36.11% return.

Boca Juniors are the most frequent opponents, and bring fond memories. Across 10 meetings there have been two wins, two losses and six draws, including the 2012 final, 1-1 in Buenos Aires then 2-0 at the Pacaembu.

Corinthians have also met Rosario Central at this stage before, in 2000. They lost 3-2 in Argentina, won 3-2 in São Paulo, then advanced 4-3 on penalties.

Elsewhere the record is mixed, one win and one defeat against Independiente, and unbeaten versus San Lorenzo with one win and one draw. They have never beaten River Plate, four losses in four, nor Argentinos Juniors, one draw and one defeat in 2023.

This season already brought an Argentinian opponent in Platense. Corinthians won 2-0 in Vicente López on matchday one, but lost 2-0 at the Neo Química Arena on the final round.

After topping Group E with 11 points, Corinthians will decide the tie in Itaquera. Rosario Central progressed as Group H runners-up with 13 points, and the return is set for 20 August in São Paulo at the same time.
