Corinthians bank on record vs Vasco for Copa do Brasil final edge

On the night of Wednesday (17), Corinthians begins its quest for the Copa do Brasil title. Playing at Neo Química Arena, Timão hosts Vasco for the first leg of the national final, starting at 9:30 PM (Brasília time), aiming to gain an advantage in the matchup to secure the tournament’s fourth championship in the return leg.

The duel will represent yet another chapter in a long history of regional rivalry between the teams, whose head-to-head clashes are nearly a century old. After all, their origins date back to 1926, when they faced each other for the first time in a friendly won by the team from Rio by 2-1. However, the overall numbers point to a Corinthians advantage, which will need to be maintained if the team wants to win the Copa do Brasil.

In total, Corinthians and Vasco have faced each other 129 times over the last 99 years, with the People’s Team recording 57 wins, 36 draws, and another 36 losses. Additionally, 368 goals have been scored, with 198 in favor of Timão and 170 against. The overall performance, therefore, is 53.4% of the points contested.

Breakdowns of these numbers are also favorable to Alvinegro. Considering only Copa do Brasil matches, for example, Corinthians holds an unbeaten record, with two wins and two draws in four games, where the team scored seven goals and conceded only one (a performance rate of 66.7%). The matches took place in the semifinals of the 1995 and 2009 tournaments, eliminating the opponent on both occasions.

Another favorable statistic concerns the matches played at Neo Química Arena. In this case, Corinthians has won seven times and drawn once in the eight times it has hosted Vasco in Itaquera, scoring 15 goals and conceding only two (a performance rate of 91.7% of the points). The only draw, in fact, occurred in 2021, when the Covid-19 pandemic led to football matches being played without fans, behind closed doors.

The last time Corinthians lost at home to Vasco, by the way, was quite some time ago: it happened on November 28, 2007, in the Brazilian Championship, with the opponent winning at Pacaembu by 1-0. Since then, Timão has hosted 14 more matches against the team, winning 11 and drawing three, scoring 21 goals and conceding three (an overall performance rate of 85.7%).
