Corinthians beat Flamengo, end seven-year wait at Mané Garrincha

Corinthians returned to winning at the Mané Garrincha Stadium after almost seven years and, on top of that, won the Supercopa do Brasil. Last Sunday afternoon (1st), Timão defeated Flamengo 2-0 in Brasília, in front of more than 71,000 fans, ending a long drought of positive results at the venue.

Until then, the last victory for the black-and-white team at the stadium was on July 29, 2018, when Corinthians thrashed Vasco da Gama 4-1 in the Brazilian Championship. In that match, Ángel Romero was the standout player by scoring three goals, while Jadson completed the score. Ricardo Graça scored the only goal for the Rio team.

Since that triumph, Corinthians returned to Mané Garrincha on three other occasions without managing to win. In 2019, they were defeated by Fluminense in the Brasileirão. In 2023, they drew with Portuguesa in the Paulista Championship, and in 2024, they were beaten by São Paulo in the second round of the Brazilian Championship.

The victory over Flamengo also helped improve Corinthians' overall record at the stadium, whose history with the club began 59 years ago. In total, Timão played 16 matches at Mané Garrincha, considering official games and friendlies, with seven wins, four draws, and five losses, resulting in a 52.1% success rate.
