Corinthians boss and directors reported to STJD, risk punishment

Coach Dorival Júnior, football executive Fabinho Soldado, and Corinthians president Osmar Stabile have been accused by the STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice) due to complaints made against the refereeing in the match against Internacional, held on October 1st, valid for the 26th round of the Brazilian Championship.

The complaint charges the three under article 258, §2º, section II of the CBJD (Brazilian Code of Sports Justice), which refers to the act of “disrespecting members of the refereeing team or disrespectfully complaining against their decisions,” considered conduct “contrary to sports discipline or ethics.”

According to the code, the sanction ranges from suspension of one to six matches for coaches, and from 15 to 180 days for other club professionals. If the tribunal interprets the episode as less severe, the punishment may be converted into a simple warning. The trial is scheduled for next Tuesday, at the 5th Disciplinary Commission of the STJD, under the report of auditor Ramon Rocha Santos.

The incident occurred at Beira-Rio, after a penalty was awarded to Internacional in the last move of the match, resulting in the goal that decreed the 1-1 draw. Referee Rodrigo José Pereira de Lima initially allowed the game to continue but changed the decision after reviewing the video at the request of the VAR.

Dorival, who was already “on the edge,” received a yellow card for complaining and was subsequently expelled, resulting in another automatic suspension. In the official match document, the referee states that the coach addressed the refereeing team “in an agitated and offensive manner” in the mixed zone, saying: “You should be leaving here in handcuffs”. According to him, police had to intervene to restrain the coach.

The report also describes that Stabile and Fabinho Soldado approached the referees in the mixed zone, “in an agitated and disrespectful manner,” repeating the phrase: “This is a disgrace what you did here”. The referee further added that Fabinho entered the field accompanied by another unidentified person, who allegedly declared: “Shameful, you are a scoundrel”.

In an interview after the match, Dorival blamed the refereeing for the result: “The game proceeded normally, a simple and easy game to referee, which unfortunately had the direct interference of Mr. Gilberto Rodrigues in the VAR and Mr. Rodrigo Pereira for the second time against Corinthians. An absurd, regrettable situation, and we leave here unfortunately without important points, which would have given us a chance to be in a much better competition.”

On that same day, the president and the executive also publicly expressed their harsh criticism of the decisions made.

Corinthians will also face two other trials next Tuesday at the STJD. In the first, also at the 5th Disciplinary Commission, the club may be fined between R$ 100 and R$ 100,000 for throwing a cup of water towards the field at Neo Química Arena, during the match against Flamengo on September 28th, for the 25th round of the Brasileirão.

The other case will be analyzed by the 6th Disciplinary Chamber and concerns the game against Sport on September 21st, for the 24th round, at Ilha do Retiro. In this process, Corinthians is answering for the use of flares by its fans and the fight between performance analyst Raony Thadeu and goalkeeping coach Douglas Luisi Dutra, from Sport, which resulted in the expulsion of both.
