Corinthians boss reviews attack, hails team’s bravery after red card

On the afternoon of this Saturday, the 25th, Corinthians returned to the field for the Brazilian Championship. In a match held at Barradão, in Salvador, valid for the 30th round of the national competition, Timão faced Vitória and, in a balanced game, won 1-0, with a goal by Charles at the end of the second half. With this result, the team reached 39 points, temporarily climbing to ninth place in the standings.

After the match, coach Dorival Júnior spoke to the press in a press conference, where he analyzed Timão’s performance: “A very scrappy game. The defenses prevailed over the attacks, and that made for a very contested midfield battle. We had few chances, and so did Vitória. We already expected this, as Vitória was coming off an interesting streak, improving in the competition. It was a very important, fundamental game. I hope we improve round by round.”

He also commented on the high number of yellow cards in the match – there were 12 in total, six for Corinthians, two of which were for Breno Bidon, who ended up being sent off. According to the Corinthians coach, the explanation lies in the game being very scrappy and physical, rather than technical. He also took the opportunity to praise the team’s attitude after being a man down at Barradão.

“We had a brave team, a vigorous team that tried to build the result. Even with one less, we didn’t back down. On the contrary, we showed personality. We went for the goal. I think we had many more positive individual performances, like Filipe Longo’s, and our attacking trio made up for the lack of creativity at this moment. But above all, we fought at every moment.”

Dorival continued his thoughts. “We had up to 77% possession against Atlético-MG, and today, again, we kept the ball for a good while, but you could see our passing was a bit slower. I think the pitch was holding the ball up a lot, not giving speed to the game, for both Corinthians and Vitória. And that made marking easier. Many contested plays, an excess of cards. But I’m happy with the result, which is important at this stage of the championship,” he explained.

Finally, the coach also commented on Corinthians’ difficulties in threatening the opponent’s goal more: “We were finding spaces between the lines. Our midfielders were managing to get out with some interesting balls, finding sometimes Memphis, sometimes Garro. In the second half, we stopped exchanging passes, and that led to a situation where our midfielders were too concerned with coming to the ball and not drawing Vitória’s midfielders out. The marking became a bit more stagnant and, as a result, the movements and spaces that were being created no longer existed.”
