Corinthians can break into the G-8 with a win over Botafogo

On the afternoon of this Sunday (30), Corinthians hosts Botafogo for the 36th round of the Brasileirão. The ball rolls on the pitch of the Neo Química Arena, starting at 4 PM (Brasília time), with Timão seeking a victory to regain good form and jump to the top half of the table.

The team led by Dorival Júnior has 45 points in the Brasileirão standings. With relegation ruled out, Timão is in the qualifying zone for the Copa Sudamericana. However, a simple victory against the Rio de Janeiro club could move Corinthians into a potential Libertadores qualifying position.

In 12th place, Corinthians would rise to 48 points with the three points and reach eighth place. This happens because the current eighth-best team in the championship is São Paulo, which also has 48 points but was thrashed by Fluminense and saw their goal difference drop. Thus, Timão would surpass them based on goal difference criteria.

At the moment, a spot in the Libertadores is guaranteed up to seventh place, due to Flamengo's title in the continental tournament. The People's Team can secure the spot through a Copa do Brasil title, but Cruzeiro and Fluminense – who are in the G-7 – are also competing for the title, and if they become champions, it opens up another spot, forming the G-8.

Corinthians had several opportunities to close in on the top teams but ended up losing or drawing against teams in the lower part of the table, such as Ceará, Red Bull Bragantino, and Sport, which is at the bottom of the competition. With nine points still to be contested, only the eighth position can be reached.
