Corinthians condemn racist abuse of Hugo Souza during Libertadores draw | OneFootball

Corinthians condemned racist abuse directed at goalkeeper Hugo Souza during their 0-0 draw with Rosario Central in the Conmebol Libertadores, and said in a statement that they will press for a Conmebol investigation and appropriate punishment for those responsible.

The club described the scenes as revolting. Home supporters targeted Souza from the stands during Thursday's last-16 tie at the Gigante de Arroyito in Rosario, Argentina.

During the second half Souza complained to referee Andrés Matonte. The match was briefly halted after the anti-racism protocol was applied, and after full-time the keeper said he had been called "mono" and "negro de me***".

It was not an isolated case for Corinthians in this year's Libertadores, in May the club reported abuse by Independiente Santa Fe during a group-stage draw in Bogotá.

The incident came in the same week Conmebol released a manual to identify and prevent discriminatory conduct in South American football, outlining concepts, statistics, examples and recommendations.

Earlier this year two Portuguesa supporters were indicted for racist abuse of Souza. The draw leaves the tie to be decided in the return leg next Thursday at 21:30 at the Neo Química Arena.
