Corinthians goalkeeper Hugo Souza was subjected to racist abuse from Rosario Central fans during the CONMEBOL Libertadores round of 16 first leg at the Gigante de Arroyito on Thursday.

The insults came from the stands behind the goal he was defending throughout the first half. As he left the pitch at the interval, a supporter continued the abuse and Hugo protested towards the terraces.

In the second half, after miscuing a goal-kick out for a throw, he complained to the officials. Ángel Di María, informed by the goalkeeper, asked the home crowd to calm down.

Referee Andrés Matonte made the anti-racism protocol signal with his arms, but did not stop play.

“Unfortunately, every time we come here it is like this, the whole game. The only thing I can do is tell the referee. You try to keep your head in the game and hope it changes one day,” he said, speaking to Globo.com at pitchside.

Corinthians later issued a statement condemning the incident as another episode of racism and saying it would seek an investigation to identify and punish those responsible.
