Corinthians’ Conselho de Orientação, Cori, has approved a new deal for Memphis, clearing the way for president Osmar Stabile to proceed after reversing his earlier stance.
According to Globo.com, the vote finished six-six before Cori president Miguel Marques e Silva cast the deciding ballot to approve the revised contract, following a presentation of the new terms by the finance department. The council cited reduced costs and backing from two partner companies.
Stabile had earlier announced he would not sign the renewal, citing financial responsibility, then reopened negotiations under fan pressure and amid threats. He sought around R$ 30 million in reductions, which Memphis accepted.
The president relied on a club statute that requires Cori authorisation for player transactions above 40 thousand minimum wages, although the body is not usually called on to ratify signings. Ahead of the vote, a finance representative outlined the revised agreement.
Cori comprises three-year councillors and former presidents of both the executive board and the Deliberative Council. The club’s marketing department had maintained partners would help fund the operation, and Stabile looked to share responsibility for the decision with the council.
