Corinthians edge Quimsa-ARG in overtime to reach Copa Sul-Americana

Corinthians returned to the court this Sunday, the 26th, for the South American Basketball League (LSB), the second-largest continental men's basketball competition. In the third round of Group C, hosted at the Wlamir Marques Gymnasium, the Alvinegro faced Quimsa from Argentina, and in an extremely balanced game, tied in regular time at 89 x 89, to win after overtime by 100 x 96.

With this result, the two teams created a triple tie in the group, along with Defensor from Uruguay, all with two wins and one loss – ABC Camp from Ecuador finished last with three losses. Thus, the qualifiers were decided by the basket difference in direct confrontations, summed up. The Uruguayans finished first (basket difference of +3), Timão second (-1), and the Argentinians third, eliminated (-2).

Coach Jece Leite fielded the following team to start the match: Elinho, Davaunta Thomas, Victão, Rafael Munford, and Gabriel Novaes. On the bench, Corinthians had Elyjah Clark, Lucas Cauê, Kauan Raymundo, Kaique, Lucas Cardoso, Matheus Monteiro, and Tico Faria available.

Corinthians started the match feeling the pressure to win to advance, and Quimsa took advantage to take the lead, quickly opening a gap and finishing the first quarter with a score of 28 x 16. Gradually, however, the Alvinegro calmed down and began to find their game, closing the gap and getting closer to the Argentinians, winning the second quarter 25 x 18 and going into halftime just five points behind.

Corinthians' recovery continued in the third period, in a very open game, with both teams finding space to score. In the final minutes, Timão managed to turn the game around, winning the quarter 28 x 21 and going into the last quarter ahead 69 x 67. However, the last ten minutes were tense, with Brazilians and Argentinians alternating the lead, which ended tied at 89 x 89, forcing a decision in extra time.

In the five minutes of overtime, the Alvinegro was superior again, taking the lead early and maintaining the advantage until the end, winning the extra time 11 x 7 and the game 100 x 96. Right after the final whistle, the athletes celebrated a lot, as the four-point difference was exactly what Corinthians needed to qualify – and at the same time, eliminate the Argentinians.

The standout player of the match was Elyjah Clark, who scored an impressive 35 points, along with Davaunta Thomas, who added another 22 in total. Gabriel Novaes contributed with nine rebounds, and Elinho once again led in assists, with five in total.

Now, Corinthians turns their attention to the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB). Next Wednesday, the 29th, Timão returns to Wlamir Marques to face Vasco, in a match that takes place at 8 PM for the third round of the competition.
