Memphis Depay could complete part of his rehabilitation from a right thigh injury in the Netherlands during the upcoming international window, according to Globo.com, after Corinthians executive Marcelo Paz set out the possibility.
The forward was substituted in the first half of Sunday’s Brasileirão draw with Flamengo in Itaquera, having created the move for Corinthians’ equaliser shortly beforehand. He is unavailable to play but is cleared to travel to Europe.
Paz said the Dutch national team can require him to report for assessment and treatment, and that Corinthians would not block any trip. He stressed the priority is a swift recovery for a player important to both club and country.
The club have confirmed a right thigh problem, though the medical staff have not disclosed a precise diagnosis. He is likely to travel to his homeland to exchange information with the Netherlands’ doctors and stay around the squad during the 23 to 31 March window.
Seeded in Group F for the World Cup, the Netherlands have home friendlies against Norway on 27 March in Amsterdam and Ecuador on 31 March in Eindhoven. Both fixtures form part of their build-up for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Paz also reiterated that both Corinthians and Memphis want to extend his deal, which runs until 20 June this year. The club are sounding out partners to help fund the striker’s wages and hope to resolve the situation before the World Cup amid a strict financial restructuring.
