Corinthians have Serie A’s worst penalty record in past year

On the evening of last Sunday (8), Corinthians faced Palmeiras at Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the seventh round of the first phase of the 2026 Paulista Championship and ended up losing by the minimum score, despite being superior in the match. The result left the Alvinegro in fifth place on the overall table with 11 points – nine goals scored and six conceded.

In addition to the defeat, the Derby also highlighted the team's poor performance in penalty kicks. In the final stretch of the first half, goalkeeper Carlos Miguel committed a foul on defender Gustavo Henrique inside the area and referee Raphael Claus called the infraction. On the kick, striker Memphis Depay ended up slipping and shot wide.

According to a survey released by Sofascore, a sports statistics app, Corinthians has, alongside Remo, the worst penalty kick performance in regular time over the last 12 months considering teams from the Brazilian Championship Serie A. In total, there were five successes and five errors in 10 attempts. Remo has the same rate, missing four of their eight attempts since then.

Only three teams have a 100% success rate: RB Bragantino (10/10), Botafogo (9/9), and Santos (7/7). In the current season, Corinthians had two penalties awarded in their favor, considering the one missed by Memphis Depay. The first was missed by Yuri Alberto, in the 1 x 1 draw against Santos, at Vila Belmiro, in the fourth round of the first phase of the Paulista Championship. When missed, the match was 0 x 0.
