Corinthians keeper praises Fiel’s support, admits slow start to the year

On the afternoon of last Sunday (1), Corinthians faced Flamengo at the Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasília, in a match valid for the final of the Supercopa do Brasil, and won by a score of 2-0. Defender Gabriel Paulista and forward Yuri Alberto scored the goals for Alvinegro in the first and second halves, respectively. With this result, the Corinthians team won the tournament for the second time, the first being in 1991, when they beat the same rival 1-0 at Morumbi Stadium.

Moments after the final whistle, still on the Mané Garrincha pitch, goalkeeper Hugo Souza spoke to the press and praised the celebration put on by the fans of Corinthians and Flamengo, especially the Fiel, who sang for the entire 90 minutes. In addition, the number 1 highlighted the high level of both teams: Alvinegro as the current Copa do Brasil champion and Flamengo, on the other hand, as the reigning winners of the Brasileirão and the Conmebol Libertadores.

“An incredible celebration, a match of the highest level. A football game that will go down in history. Two teams of the highest caliber. One, the current Libertadores and Brasileirão champion, against the current Copa do Brasil champion. Two teams, as I said, of the highest level. As for the fans, I have nothing to say, it was an amazing party. Our fans didn’t stop singing for a second. This place was packed, 70,000 people. It’s so good to be part of this and to give back the joy we received,” he began.

Right after, the goalkeeper was asked about facing Flamengo again, the club where he was developed, noting that his career turnaround began when he arrived at Corinthians in July 2024. Since then, he has played 96 matches wearing the Corinthians shirt, being part of the squad that sparked the comeback in the Brazilian Championship two seasons ago, as well as playing a key and decisive role in winning the Paulistão (2025), Copa do Brasil (2025), and Supercopa do Brasil (2026).

“I think my comeback started as soon as I arrived at Corinthians. When I got to Corinthians, I found peace, I found the happiness of playing football again. And I think, regardless of the opponent on the other side, the club that raised me, where I was very happy, I am very grateful to the institution. I step onto the field and give it my all, I always want to do my best for Corinthians. Never thinking about the others, or the crowd we’re playing against. Always thinking about Corinthians.”

He then acknowledged that his start to the 2026 season was not the best. In the matches against RB Bragantino and Santos, for the Campeonato Paulista, the goalkeeper’s performance was questioned by some fans and the press: “Obviously, we can’t always please everyone. That’s football. I want to please my fans. But the results speak for themselves. That’s three titles in a year and a half, just under 100 games, 10 saved penalties, four call-ups to the Brazilian National Team.”

“But we don’t need to say anything. I just need to keep playing football, keep showing it on the field, keep working hard. I know that this year, in the first games of the year, I wasn’t able to reach my best level. I’m aware of that. But today, I performed much better. I’m sure I’m already getting back to being who I am,” he concluded.

With Hugo Souza, now, after winning the Supercopa, the club from Parque São Jorge will return to the pitch this Thursday (5), at 8:30 pm (Brasília time), to face Capivariano at Neo Química Arena, for the sixth round of the first phase of the Campeonato Paulista.
