Corinthians look to win despite missing Internacional’s main nemesis

Corinthians will face Internacional on the evening of Wednesday, September 30, at 7:30 PM (Brasília time), at Beira-Rio Stadium, in a match valid for the 26th round of the Brazilian Championship. Timão seeks to overcome the absence of its top scorer against the rival to achieve a positive result.

For the clash against the team from Rio Grande do Sul, Alvinegro Paulista will not be able to count on striker Yuri Alberto, who is the player who has scored the most goals against Internacional wearing the Corinthians jersey. The number 9, who has already played for the opponent, has six goals in five matches against the Colorados.

Without the striker available, Corinthians has only two other players who have already scored goals against Internacional: Romero and Maycon. Both, in fact, are the longest-serving players in the current squad.

The Paraguayan forward has two goals in 12 games against the opponent, the first in the first leg of the fourth round of the 2017 Copa do Brasil, when the teams drew 1-1, and the second in a 2-1 defeat in 2023, in the Brazilian Championship.

The midfielder, meanwhile, has one goal in seven matches against the team from Rio Grande do Sul. Maycon found the net precisely in the second leg of the fourth round of the 2017 Copa do Brasil, which also ended in a 1-1 draw. On that occasion, the team was eliminated on penalties.

However, Romero is not in good form at Corinthians and Maycon has only one goal in 2025. The Paraguayan hasn’t scored since April 24, when he netted the winner in a 1-0 victory over Racing-URU, and has been overlooked in favor of players like Gui Negão and Kayke even when the starting forwards are absent. The midfielder, on the other hand, scored his only goal of the year in the 3-2 win over Vasco, on August 24.

Without Yuri Alberto and Memphis Depay, who is the team's second top scorer of the year with eight goals, Corinthians is hoping that new names will find the back of the net. The main hope rests on the young Gui Negão, who has been a standout since being permanently promoted to the professional squad and has four goals in 12 games.

Now, Corinthians meets the team from Rio Grande do Sul again, aiming to win in order to recover in the national tournament and close in on the teams fighting for a spot in the Libertadores. Timão is in 13th place in the Brasileirão, with 29 points from 25 rounds.
