Corinthians midfielder handed STJD ban after red card against RB Bragantino

This Monday (1st), Corinthians midfielder Charles was sentenced by the 1st Disciplinary Commission of the STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice) to a two-match suspension. The number 35 was punished by the body due to his expulsion, in injury time, in the defeat against RB Bragantino, away, by 2 x 1, in the 32nd round of the Brazilian Championship.

Charles was charged under article 254 of the CBJD (Brazilian Code of Sports Justice), which refers to the act of physical aggression during a match. The midfielder has already served one match of suspension and, therefore, will also not be in the match this Wednesday (3rd), against Fortaleza, at 7:30 PM (Brasília time), at Arena Castelão, for the 37th and penultimate round of the national tournament.

In the match against RB Bragantino, the number 35 attempted to slap Jhon Jhon, RB Bragantino's midfielder, and initially, Edna Alves Batista issued a yellow card. However, even without going to VAR, Edna chose to expel the player and did not indicate whether she had withdrawn the previous yellow card, considering that Charles already had a yellow card before the incident.

“After warning the athlete Charles with a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct, I was informed by assistant Fabrini Beviláqua that he slapped his opponent, Mr. Jhonatan. Given this information and because it was a violent conduct and not unsportsmanlike behavior, I applied a direct red card, withdrawing the previously presented yellow card to the athlete,” reported the referee in a document sent to the CBF.

The decision generated indignation from president Osmar Stabile and football executive Fabinho Soldado in interviews with the press after the match. During the trial, Corinthians argued that Charles did not exhibit violent conduct and claimed that the action was hostile behavior. However, the STJD did not accept the player's defense argument and stated that even though the aggression did not actually occur, the athlete had the intention to assault his professional colleague.

For Corinthians, where he has been since mid-2024, Charles has scored two goals and provided one assist in 59 matches, with 32 wins, 19 draws, and eight losses – a 65% success rate. He was part of the team's surge in the last Brasileirão towards the Pré-Libertadores and was the state champion of 2025, against Palmeiras, in Itaquera.
