Corinthians marked a 3-0 win over Capivariano with tributes to club icon Basílio at Neo Química Arena on Thursday.
According to Meu Timao, the 77-year-old, known as Pé de Anjo, walked the pitch moments before the sixth-round Paulistão fixture, was saluted by supporters and received a commemorative plaque from Rafael Castilho, the club’s cultural director.
The club also replaced the corner-flag designs with a personalised version honouring the eternal number 8 and his historic Paulista strike in 1977, while the stadium screened a special video.
Basílio entered Corinthians folklore by scoring the goal that ended a 23-year title drought in 1977, a 1-0 win against Ponte Preta. He played for the club from 1975 to 1981, making 253 appearances and scoring 29 goals, and later had four spells as coach totalling 116 games.
Corinthians are back in action on Sunday at 20:30 against Palmeiras in Itaquera, in the seventh round of the Paulistão.
