Corinthians face Estudiantes of Argentina in La Plata at 21:30 on Wednesday, chasing a place in the Libertadores semi-finals. According to Meu Timao, this is the club's sixth quarter-final at this stage.
Their previous five quarter-finals brought two progressions and three eliminations. In 1996 they lost 3-0 to Grêmio then won 1-0 in the return, but went out. In 1999 Palmeiras prevailed on penalties after each side won 2-0, with Dinei and Vampeta missing from the spot.
In 2000 Corinthians reached the last four for the first time, drawing 1-1 with Atlético Mineiro and winning 2-1 thanks to Ricardinho and Edílson, before again bowing out to Palmeiras on penalties.
The story changed in 2012, when a goalless draw at São Januário preceded Cássio's decisive save from Diego Souza and Paulinho's late header in a 1-0 win over Vasco da Gama. They then beat Santos and defeated Boca Juniors in the Pacaembu final to lift the trophy.
Their most recent quarter-final was in 2022, when Flamengo won 2-0 at the Neo Química Arena and 1-0 at the Maracanã. Fernando Diniz's side play the first leg at Jorge Luis Hirschi at 21:30. The return is next Wednesday, 16, also at 21:30 at the Neo Química Arena.
