Corinthians were knocked out of the Campeonato Paulista on Saturday night, losing 1-0 to Novorizontino at Estádio Jorge Ismael de Biasi. It was their fifth semi-final exit of this century.

Their most recent top-four run before this year came last season, when they beat Santos 2-1 at the Neo Química Arena and went on to win the title.

The previous time Corinthians fell at this stage was in 2022, a 2-1 defeat away to São Paulo at Morumbi. Palmeiras have been their most frequent semi-final nemesis in this period, knocking them out twice.

Notable semi-final exits this century include 2-2 against Palmeiras on 19/04/2015, losing 6-5 on penalties, and 2-2 against Audax on 23/04/2016, beaten 4-1 on spot-kicks.

They also lost 0-2 to Palmeiras on 16/05/2021 and 2-1 at São Paulo on 27/03/2022.

Across the tournament’s history, the semi-final record shows 15 progressions and nine eliminations, with 50 goals scored and 42 conceded.

Focus now shifts to the Campeonato Brasileiro, with an away match at Coritiba on Wednesday 11 March at Couto Pereira, kick-off 21:30, in round five.
