Corinthians supporters mocked Paraguay on social media after a 4-1 defeat to the United States in their 2026 World Cup opener, linking the result to the omission of Romero. According to Meu Timao, the online reaction gathered pace on Friday.

Fans posted that Paraguay were paying for leaving Ángel Romero out, while others joked that a Corinthians curse had struck. Many comments tied the scoreline to his absence from the final squad.

Romero made Paraguay’s provisional list but was not selected in the final 26. After the announcement he said on social media that he was disappointed yet respected the coaches’ decision, adding that he was proud to have represented the national team for more than a decade, including in difficult times.

His most recent call-up came in the September FIFA window, when he was still at Corinthians and featured against Ecuador and Peru in South American qualifying. He now plays for Boca Juniors in Argentina and has 13 appearances and one goal in 2026.

Paraguay secured their World Cup place on matchday 17 with a 0-0 draw against Ecuador to clinch sixth. The qualification ended a 16-year absence from the tournament.
