Corinthians to honour Oscar Schmidt with special flags and kit against Vasco | OneFootball

Corinthians will pay tribute to Oscar Schmidt during their Campeonato Brasileiro meeting with Vasco da Gama in the 13th round at Neo Química Arena.

According to Meu Timao, the corner flags will carry Oscar’s name alongside the number 14 in orange, reflecting the basketball, and the same motif will appear on the players’ kit.

The stadium’s Átrio area will display symbolic items from his 1996 title-winning season with Corinthians’ basketball team. A minute’s silence will be observed before kick-off, with an honourable mention to Oscar in the traditional São Jorge pre-match ritual.

Oscar died on 17 April after feeling unwell and being taken to a hospital in São Paulo, with his death confirmed in the afternoon. His family chose not to disclose further details.

He joined Corinthians in 1995 to help restore the club as a force in basketball after three continental titles in the 1960s. The team sought to revive that era and turned to Oscar, already one of the country’s leading figures, to lead the project.

The resurgence was swift, capped by the 1996 Brazilian Championship, the club’s last before the NBB era. Corinthians beat União Corinthians 3-1 in the finals. Oscar was named the series standout, averaging 34 points per game, finishing as top scorer on 959 points, and taking MVP honours.
