Corinthians honour Oscar Schmidt with special flags and kit for Vasco match | OneFootball

Corinthians will pay tribute to Oscar Schmidt at the Neo Química Arena when they face Vasco da Gama in the 13th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.

According to Meu Timao, the corner flags will carry his name alongside the number 14 in orange, a nod to the colour of a basketball, and the same motif will appear on the players' shirts.

The stadium will also host displays of symbolic items from the club icon, a Brazilian champion with Corinthians in 1996. There will be a minute's silence before kick-off and a special mention in the traditional São Jorge pre-match ritual.

Schmidt died on 17 April. He was taken to a São Paulo hospital after feeling unwell and his death was confirmed that afternoon, with his family choosing not to share further details.

Signed by Corinthians in 1995, he was tasked with helping restore the club to basketball prominence after its continental treble in the 60s. His impact was immediate as the team returned to silverware in 1996, the club's last national crown before the NBB era.

In the final, a 3-1 series win over União Corinthians, he was the standout and averaged 34 points per game. He finished as the competition's top scorer on 959 points and was named tournament MVP.
