Corinthians to pay R$11.37m to ex-defender after court defeat

Judge Camila Rodrigues Borges de Azevedo, from the 19th Civil Court of the São Paulo State Court of Justice, has ordered Corinthians to pay R$ 11.37 million to defender Gil. This amount corresponds to unpaid image rights between July and December 2023, as well as a remaining debt from the defender's first stint at the club.

In addition to the principal amount, Corinthians was also ordered to pay attorney fees, set at 10% of the total value of the lawsuit. In the ruling, the magistrate clarified that, although the club is seeking adherence to the Centralized Execution Regime (RCE) in another ongoing process in the Court of Justice, the lawsuit filed by Gil has a “cognitive nature,” aiming to recognize the existence of the debt.

An idol in the recent history of Corinthians, Gil had two stints at the club, totaling 444 matches played, with 435 as a starter. Over seven and a half years wearing the black and white jersey, the defender accumulated 185 wins, 145 draws, and 110 losses.

During this period, the defender scored 19 goals and won three titles: the Paulista Championship and the South American Recopa, both in 2013, as well as the Brazilian Championship in 2015. His good performances for Timão also earned him call-ups to the Brazilian National Team.

Recently, before the Majestic derby held at the Neo Química Arena, Gil was honored by the current Corinthians board. Alongside his son, the defender received a plaque in recognition of his services to the club and was applauded by the fans present at the stadium.
