Corinthians trio lose unbeaten run at Itaquera, manager reviews performance

On the afternoon of this Sunday (9), Corinthians was defeated 1-0 by Ceará at the Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the 33rd round of the Brazilian Championship. The setback, in turn, caused the Alvinegro to drop to 13th place with 42 points (11 wins, nine draws, and 13 losses – 35 goals scored and 38 conceded).

The match also marked the first time the GYM trio (Garro, Yuri Alberto, and Memphis Depay) lost a game playing together at the Neo Química Arena after 20 games. Previously, they had 15 wins and five draws. Last year, they were crucial in the team's surge in the 2024 Brasileirão and in winning the 2025 Paulista Championship against Palmeiras.

In 24 games they started together since last year, the three have combined for 49 goal contributions – 31 goals and 18 assists. Playing as starters together in Itaquera, Corinthians' decisive trio has 11 wins, three draws, and only one loss – an 80% success rate.

Moments after the match, coach Dorival Júnior was questioned about the GYM trio's performance in recent games – whether it's possible they might be benched, acknowledging their quality even if they are not at their individual best.

“Look, I think that, when you have three players of this level, you wait and always generate a very positive expectation, much more positive than naturally negative. We have to seek our best again. This is an awareness we must have: the recognition that, really, in the last matches, we haven't had adequate production consistent with what we can present,” he began.

Additionally, the coach also responded about the delay in bringing on striker Gui Negão – who came on precisely in place of Memphis Depay – at 26 minutes into the second half and explained the change with the justification of 'creating a new situation'.

“Create a new situation, a new scenario. We haven't been successful with our three forwards. We needed to look for some alternative, some situation. It's just a natural fact within a match. If it's not happening, you have the obligation to seek the possibilities that exist. Guilherme is a player who is in a process of evolution, of growth. It was a possibility that, suddenly, could have worked if we had a slightly smaller net,” he said.

Now, after being defeated by Ceará, 1-0, at home, Corinthians prepares for the team's next commitment, which will only be after the FIFA Date. On November 20, at 7 pm (Brasília time), Corinthians will host São Paulo at the Neo Química Arena, for the 34th round of the Brasileirão.
