Corinthians used Memphis Depay’s contract renewal to poke fun at Palmeiras, invoking their 2025 Paulista title and a corner-flag flashpoint.

According to Meu Timao, the club’s post referenced victory at Neo Química Arena and showed Depay standing on the ball near the corner flag late on against Palmeiras, which sparked a mass confrontation. The CBF later outlawed the move. The message also played on his surname in a father to son theme, telling people to tear up receipts.

The jab followed a Palmeiras note on an official WhatsApp channel after Corinthians had said on Tuesday they would not extend Depay’s deal. In a sponsor activation, Palmeiras quipped that only they understand “de pay”.

Depay arrived in September 2024 and has nine appearances, yielding four wins, three draws and two defeats, plus one goal and one assist. His only goal came in a 1-0 first-leg win in the Copa do Brasil last 16 against Palmeiras. Corinthians went on to claim a fourth Copa do Brasil title.

The 32-year-old has extended his contract to 31 July 2028 after a late turnaround. He is registered on the BID and could be available to Fernando Diniz on Thursday for the Libertadores last-16 second leg against Rosario Central of Argentina at Neo Química Arena, 21:30.
