Corinthians without Hugo Souza again after nearly six months out

Corinthians will experience an unusual classic this Wednesday when they face Santos at Vila Belmiro, for the 28th round of the Brazilian Championship. After almost six months, the team will take the field without Hugo Souza, who is serving the Brazilian National Team and is suspended in the national competition.

Throughout the 2025 season, the goalkeeper missed 11 of the 59 matches played by Timão. In these games, including Paulista, Brasileirão, and the South American Cup, the club accumulated five wins, five draws, and three losses, conceding 14 goals, maintaining a 60% success rate. On all occasions, the substitute was Matheus Donelli, who was last in goal during the 2-1 victory over Sport on April 19, in the Brasileirão.

At the start of the Paulista Championship, Hugo Souza was absent for three rounds due to tonsillitis. Later, he was rested against Portuguesa and also did not play in the Brasileirão debut against Bahia. Subsequently, he missed six consecutive games due to a grade 2B injury in the right thigh rectus femoris.

The goalkeeper's absence is unprecedented under Dorival Júnior's command. In 30 games with the current coaching staff — the last directed by assistant Lucas Silvestre — Hugo Souza was the only player to participate in all matches. Midfielder Breno Bidon, with 26 appearances, follows him.

This time, however, the substitute is expected to be different. Former immediate backup Matheus Donelli has not been listed since July when the club began discussions about a possible departure, still without an agreement. Thus, the young Felipe Longo, champion of the 2024 Copinha, emerges as the main candidate for the starting position — and could achieve a rare feat among goalkeepers developed in Corinthians' youth system this century.

Meanwhile, Hugo Souza will be the starting goalkeeper for the Brazilian National Team on Tuesday at 7:30 AM (Brasília time) in a friendly against Japan in Tokyo. The number 1 will watch the Alvinegro Classic from afar, scheduled for Wednesday at 9:30 PM at Vila Belmiro.
