Corinthians Women boast near-perfect record in Argentina, stats here

Next Thursday, October 2nd, Corinthians will begin their journey towards a sixth Copa Libertadores Femenina title. In their first Group A match, the Brabas will face Dragonas Independiente del Valle-EQU, directly from Estadio Florencio Sola, in Banfield, Argentina, where the tournament will be held.

In their quest for another South American title, the Alvinegras boast an almost impeccable record playing in the neighboring country. That’s because, throughout their history, counting both official matches and friendlies, Corinthians have never lost when playing in Argentina, earning a title and a third place in the competitions held there.

The first series of matches in Argentina took place at the end of 2018. Right after winning their first Brazilian Championship, Corinthians were invited to be the main attraction of the Rosario Cup, a friendly tournament held at the Club Atletico Academia Deportiva field.

The tournament featured 12 clubs, ten of them local. In the first stage, the Brabas thrashed San Lorenzo Histórico-ARG 15-0 and Club Social Lux “A”-ARG 7-0. Then, in the semifinals, the team beat Atlético Belgrano-ARG 2-0, and finally, in the final, delivered another rout, this time against Unión Santa Fé-ARG, 11-0, bringing home the cup title.

Three years later, Timão returned to the country, this time to compete in the 2020 Copa Libertadores—which was delayed by a few months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the defending continental champions, the team was the top seed in Group A, where they won all three matches: 16-0 against El Nacional-EQU, 8-0 over Universitario-PER, and 3-0 against América de Cali-COL.

Advancing to the knockout stage, the Brabas faced Santiago Morning-CHI in the quarterfinals, delivering another rout, this time 7-0. In the semifinals, however, a setback: facing América de Cali-COL again, the team drew 1-1 after conceding a goal in the 48th minute of the second half, losing the spot in the final on penalties, 4-3. Then, in the third-place match, they beat Universidad de Chile-CHI 4-0.

Playing in Argentina, therefore, Corinthians Women have played ten matches, with a total of nine wins and one draw (a 93.3% point rate), as well as an impressive 74 goals scored and only one conceded.
