In Corralejo, Fuerteventura, Leeds United supporters pack into The York bar for matchdays, mixing locals with holidaymakers and creating a lively hub far from Elland Road. The island branch has become a lifeline for fans keen to watch friendlies.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the Leeds United Supporters’ Club Fuerteventura branch is run by John Holliday, a former Elland Road season-ticket holder who moved to the island 15 years ago. Leeds are among the best represented in the town, alongside Newcastle.
The group meets at The York on Calle Juan de Austria, drawing about a dozen locals and many who travel from elsewhere. The bar has roughly 25 seats yet regularly hosts more than 40 Leeds fans, with 65 squeezing in for last season’s FA Cup tie against Harrogate Town.
Holliday says the atmosphere was incredible when Leeds beat Manchester United, and on one occasion five fans in a row held North East Upper season tickets at the same time.
Leeds’ US pre-season brings late kick-offs, with Fuerteventura sharing UK time and being five hours ahead of the east coast. Wrexham and Sunderland start at 12.30am UK time, Liverpool in Chicago kicks off at eight pm on Saturday the second of August. Leeds are expected to host RB Leipzig at Elland Road on the weekend of eight and nine August, then play Manchester United in Dublin, and the bar will show all friendlies, although US timings may be prohibitive.
