Nathaniel Brown’s performance against Finland has intensified Germany’s left-back debate, with the Eintracht Frankfurt defender pushing David Raum for a World Cup start.
Sunday’s friendly brought a surprise, with Brown starting at left-back ahead of RB Leipzig captain David Raum. He covered the flank for 90 minutes, and Raum stayed on the bench. According to Absolut Fussball, Brown later called it an open battle that helps both players.
Julian Nagelsmann praised Brown’s potential, citing his one-on-one strength, pace, intelligence and comfort in the half-space. He added that Raum is carrying minor knocks and stressed the players offer different styles. In his view, either could start.
In March, Raum began the first friendly against Switzerland, while Brown was handed the second against Ghana. The question now is whether Brown could edge ahead for Germany’s World Cup opener against Curaçao in two weeks. His display on Sunday did not harm his case.
Joshua Kimmich, stationed on the right, noted that both are full-backs but Brown pushes higher than he does, and that combinations with Florian Wirtz worked. He also pointed out Raum has delivered many good performances. He underlined the value of having options.
Germany face the United States on Saturday in their final warm-up, which may clarify the left-back picture. Rotation between Brown and Raum is conceivable, depending on opponents and tactical needs.
