Philippe Coutinho has explained on social media why he asked to leave Vasco, saying he is mentally exhausted and felt his cycle ended after the Volta Redonda match. He added he did not return for the second half to prioritise his mental health.
According to Globo.com, he surprised the board by seeking to terminate his contract, with his representatives informing president Pedrinho. He also called Fernando Diniz, who tried to change his mind without success.
The club had already opened talks to extend the 33-year-old’s deal, which runs until June, at least to the end of the year.
Inside the club, his decision is seen as unrelated to the work environment, instead reflecting the build-up of recent criticism. He was booed for the first time at São Januário against Volta Redonda last week and Diniz offered support.
Coutinho stressed he would never disrespect the fans, team-mates or Vasco, said he has always given his all, and described his bond with the club as love. He said he is grateful for his time and believes stepping back and ending this cycle is the right move now.
